April 2007

>
April 6th - Well, finally all our boat repairs and deliveries are done for the 2007 season and now it is time to get serious about the fishing.

I see, in my absence, Colin Barnes on the “Indigo Blue” has started the Marlin season off early with a nice 350lb. Blue - in March no less!  It must be an early scout, as there are lots of good Wahoo and Tuna fishing to be had before the Marlin bite really gets going, in June. Talking of Wahoo’s, the winter Wahoo run has been one of the better ones in a few years, with catches in the double figures of nice sized fish (30-60lbs.). All that will change soon as the water heats up, which marks the beginning of the spring run of lizards (small Wahoos) and schoolies, Yellowfins.

For the Whale Watchers out there, the Humpbacks are plentiful, but remember, they will gone in a few weeks so you need to make a trip to the Edge soon.

Happy Easter to all!

May 2007

May 1st - Hey, May is here, so where are the fish?

Well, the water temperature is still a little chilly at 69º but there are signs of the Wahoo Spring run kicking off. “DeMako” has had a few good days of Wahoo fishing to the northeast of the island (5-8 Wahoos) and we have seen a lot of bait to the north, as well.  The Wahoo bite on the Banks has been so-so, but there are some signs of a Tuna bite taking place on Challenger.   Capt. James on the “Wound Up” has been focusing his time on hunting down the Yellowfins with some success, with catches of 3 to 13 fish, mostly schoolie, but some nice ones mixed in!

On the Blue Marlin count, #2 was released on the “Reel Action” last Sunday - congratulations to Andrew & Saul!”

With the full moon tomorrow, we will see a steady improvement in the fishing, so tune in for next week's report.
May 12th - Well, the number 13 has been a lucky number for “DeMako” this week!   With the start of the Spring Wahoo run, we have had some good catches this week, with our three best days all coming in at 13 Wahoo’s each trip.   Most of the action is taking place on Argus Bank, but we are also picking up a few on the way there and back.  We are still waiting for our first Marlin attack, with no sightings yet.

The Tuna look like they may be ready to make a showing on the southern side of both Banks, with a few being caught and even more being seen breaking the surface.  Your chances seem to be about the same, either trolling for them or chumming - either way, only a few to be caught.

The water temperature is moving up steadily, so next week should see an improvement in the Tuna & Marlin bite and the Wahoos should remain good through the rest of the month.   So, what are you waiting for?

LET'S GO FISHING!!

May 27th - Wahoo’s are still the main game in town!

There have been great catches of 10-20 fish being reported from the east end all the way to Argus Bank and in between.  De Mako’s best catch, this week, was with Johnny Reiss’s trip on Friday, with a final tally of 19 Wahoos.

The Yellowfins are still playing the 'here one day and gone the next day' game.  Let’s hope this is not a sign of another slow Tuna year.  We can only hope they are coming late!  Lots of north winds have kept the water temperature down to 70º - no increase since last week.  The Blue Marlin seem to be making their way up here with or without the warm water, as there are one or two attacks reported everyday.

Usually, I take the May 24th holiday off but, in recent years, the weather has not been very good so I decided to fish this year and I’m sure glad I did……”I caught me a Marlin!”

We had two shots, one on Challenger Bank that we lost and the second one was on the SW edge, resulting in a 250lb. Blue Marlin release for team XL Capital.

Monday, we have Bill Elliott out fishing.  This is the gentleman who caught the first Grander in May, last year.

Stay tuned to see if we can do it again!

June 2007

June 10th - Wahoo wonderland!

The Wahoo bite remains great - catch as many as you need and then head out to the deep water in search of Mr. Blue Marlin!

That has basically been “DeMako’s” game plan all week and it has worked great, except for the lack of Marlin bites.

The water temperature is still cold, at 72º, which is great if you are a Wahoo, but it is slowing down the Marlin and Tuna fishing.

Don’t get me wrong, Marlin's & Tuna's are being seen and caught, just not to the level you would expect for the middle of June!   Most Marlin attacks have been close to land, just off the Edge, while the best Tuna fishing has been on the SE corner of Challenger and the eastern side of Argus

With more and more US Marlin hunting boats arriving everyday and also the start of the International Light Tackle Tournament on Monday, let's all hope both the Marlin and Tuna bite pick up very soon!

Good Luck!
June 10th - Father’s Day was not the best weather but, for those that ventured out, the fishing was great! We, on De Mako, decided to spend the day chumming for Tunas, on the SE corner of Challenger.  It turned out to be a good move, as Jeff, Bruce and Super Dave spent the entire day pulling on Tunas.  Some of the smaller ones we released and some of the bigger ones, after an hour long battle, decided to release themselves!  At days end, our three best Yellowfins were all in the 70lb. range - great fun!

The Blue Marlin bite remains slow for this time of year, but we did manage to release two, this week - a 400lb. on Tuesday, by Kelly, and a 550lb. on Thursday, by Jeff.  Congratulations to both for two fine catches!

The water temperature is still colder than normal and the Wahoo bite still remains good - very unusual, but nice!

What can I tell you, all in all, the fishing is good.  Sure, there are the odd bad days fishing mixed in but hey, that’s fishing!
